The science unit in Year 3 is 'Parts of Plants'. The children have been finding out about the life cycle of a plant and the function of the different parts of the plant.
The children have been observing and comparing roots in different plants. Through various experiments the children have been investigating how water is transported within plants. They have enjoyed sorting leaves and doing leaf rubbings whilst finding out how leaves use the energy from the sun to make their own food. This week we have been examining the role of flowers, in pairs the children dissected lilies to help them identify the different parts found inside a flower and how these help with pollination. Enjoy looking at our pictures! Zacharia made a very impressive diorama of an ocean habitat. Which animals do you think might live in this habitat?
He also took the time to do an art lesson with author and illustrator Rob Biddulph and the results are fantastic. You can too if you visit http://www.robbiddulph.com/draw-with-rob Well done Zacharia! Today we celebrated World Book Day at William Davis.
The theme this year is to 'Share a Million Stories'. In Year 2, we thought we'd do our part by reading a story to each other. Look at our wonderful story sharing! Just before the half-term break, William Davis had their PSHE Day.
Our focus was on online safety. In Year 2 we did a whole range of activities about how to be safe online, as well as what information we can and can't share online. Here are some photos of one of the activities. We had to list some of the things we enjoy doing online. We then talked about what sort of information we can share while doing these things. Recently, Year 2 ventured all the way to Greenwich to take part in a special day.
To help with our work on Islands, we went to Pirate school! We went on a fantastic adventure, exploring the sea and looking for treasure. It was a fantastic day and we learned a lot. This week, we have been putting all the knowledge we have gained over the past few weeks to make our own island map! On our map we will include human and natural features.
Here are some photographs of what we have done so far. Stay tuned for more! One of the things we are trying to focus on during English this half term is using our voice to retell a story.
For homework recently, we had the task to create a 'personal history' box. We used these boxes today to retell a story from when we were younger, using story language. For our topic on Islands, we took time to think about and discover how islands are formed.
We found out that some islands form because of the ocean getting deeper and deeper. Some volcanoes also form due to volcanoes. We then decided, for a bit of fun, to make our own volcanoes! Have a look at our pictures. Could you try it at home? In Year 2 for Spring 1, we are exploring 'Islands'.
To start our unit, we decided to draw a map of what we think an island might look like. We also labelled the human and natural features of an island. The next day we read 'Katie Morag and the Two Grandmothers'. It is a fantastic book set on an island in Scotland. We used the book to help us more features that we did not think of at first. Keep an eye on this blog page... We'll be looking at how islands are formed soon and we have some very exciting lessons planned! For the past few DT lessons, we have been thinking about designing a healthy fruit dish.
We decided to make a healthy fruit cup with yoghurt, bananas, raspberries, apples and blueberries. We spent time planning, cutting and making our fruit. Have a look at the pictures. What fruits can you see? Would you like to eat them? |
